Summary/Abstract: Václav Hladík (1868–1913) was Czech novelist, journalist and translator. He was a prolific and quite popular write during his life but later he has been forgotten. In his literary work, Hladík was influenced by French realism and naturalism. Honore de Balsac, Guy de Maupassant or Anatole France were among his favourite writers. His short stories and novels attempted to portray lives of contemporary upper classes in salons, theatres or promenades, but also to show work of clerks, journalists, artists. Nowadays, Hladík is largely connected with convenience literature. Contemporary literary scholars Dagmar Mocná, Eva Štědroňová or Jiří Poláček perceive Hladík’s work as popular erotic prose (sometimes with secession symptom), Hladík is evaluated as a inovator in this genre and equally as the most important representative of this genre. The aim of this article is to present Hladík’s work in a broader context. On the basis of interpretation from various literary historical texts we will try to describe the position of Hladík’s works from the poetics of fin de siècle to nowadays and to show the difficulties when trying to evaluate this writer.
