Summary/Abstract: Concerto for Marimba and Strings was commissioned by the marimba playerBogdan Bácanu for the International Marimba Competition in Linz, Austria (2006), and written in 2005. It has become a staple of percussion repertoire, and has been performed more than two hundred times all over the world. The composer uses an original musical language inherent to the typical singing nature of French music, flamenco and jazz improvisation. The Concertois a two-part cycle that combines virtuosity and chamber style. Dialogueprinciple runs through the whole musical structure. Contrast, variation, contrasting polyphony, including vertical synthesis of different themes, are actively used. Also, a melody building additive principle is used, adding tones not after the last tone, but before the first – going further inside the measure at every following motive. Séjourné is working on a new first movement of the Concerto, due to be finished by April 2015, and performed again at the International Marimba Competition in Linz in October.
