Summary/Abstract: This paper concerns the role of the interdisciplinary subject called ‘theory of musical content’ in the curriculum of the Moscow Conservatory. The innovation of this discipline – which marked a turning point both for the Conservatory and its ISM department (interdisciplinary specializations of musicologists) and for the country as a whole – is intimately connected with the fundamental processes that began with the creation of New Russia in 1991. Although ‘Theory of musical content’ was introduced in only three performance departments, it promoted wider cooperation throughout the Conservatory with modern composers who wrote all kinds of music using various techniques in diverse genres and styles.
