Summary/Abstract: The aim of the article is to initiate a discussion on the methods of conceptual analysis of closely related languages. It proposes a contrastive conceptual analysis of the axiological lexicon in Russian and Ukrainian, based on the example of the concepts чужбина and чужина (‘a foreign country’, or in a broader sense ‘any place which is not home’). The concepts are of primary importance for both languages and cultures. The article explores the traditional representation of чужбинa in folklore on the basis of incantations, religious poems, ballads, mourning verses, carols, proverbs, idioms and toponyms. Compared are lexicographic definitions of the lexemes чужбина/чужина in both languages, since the Middle Ages till now. Fixed word combinations with the lexemes and their synonyms, as well as selected literary contexts are also investigated.
