Summary/Abstract: In this paper I present a short episode of the history of exorcism. In the first part I write about the general history of exorcism and I present the different historical opin-ions concerning exorcism. In the second part I present the liturgical praxis of exorcism in the Hungarian Reformed Church in the 17th century according to the Liturgi-cal Book of Máté János Samarjai. The Liturgical Book of Bishop Samarjai, who studied in Heidelberg, shows strong Catholic and Lutheran characteristics, and the sources of the Exorcist Liturgy are the Catholic descriptions, with protestant modifi-cations. While many ministers of the 17th century considered that exorcism was part of pastoral care, without Catholic elements (István Geleji Katona, Albert Szenczi Mol-nár), Bishop Samarjai applied the Catholic filling it form with protestant contents.
