Summary/Abstract: Any pedagogical measures are to “shape the right attitude of wards towards their future life.” Thus they are to prepare them for a better life through education, acquiring professional skills, finding a place in society, as well as starting a healthy and lasting family. It is easier to be a part of the world and make choices if a person is able to analyse the ever-changing reality and to interpret it. It is crucial how a young man perceives the world and their chances for the future. What helps to develop and implement one’s plans is positive orientation. It is a basic predisposition to notice and attach weight to positive aspects of one’s experience and oneself. The concept assumes that a positive perception of the world, oneself, and the future reflects the fundamental human predisposition to cope with life against all the odds, difficulties, and failures. The first part of the paper focuses on the theory of positive orientation and selected concepts of purposeful behaviour, while showing human action as goals set by a person. The second part of the paper presents the research findings on positive orientation and life goals of wards of the Youth Educational Centres in Poland.
