Dynamics of English in the Global Lingua Franca Competition

Summary/Abstract: The current status and the future of English is examined by focusing on the evaluation of the present-day expanse of the Anglophone sphere and the various reactions brought about by this case of linguistic expansionism. Statistical data as well as other significant examples are presented as arguments describing English as a dominant world language functioning in de jure or de facto contexts of preeminence. The difficulties hindering its growth, the causes and the effects of linguistic success and the challenges threatening its position are evoked in an effort to understand the unique case of the English language in its gradual progress to the position of global lingua franca.
