Summary/Abstract: The object of research is the creative work of M.K. Čiurlionis (1875-1911) in the context of 20th-century art, particularly that of Poland. The article discusses the intersections of Romanticism, Symbolism and Modernism. Many present-day researchers consider the Lithuanian artist Čiurlionis to be a symbolist, as well as one of the forerunners of European Modernism. On the basis of analyses of several specific examples from Čiurlionis’ creative heritage and Polish art, the author of the article argues that Čiurlionis keeps to an intermediate position between Romanticism, Symbolism and modernistic aspirations. Though the iconography of his works is characteristic of Romanticism, and for that it is close to the iconography of Polish artists, its fluid qualities make Čiurlionis closer to European Modernism. Broader reflections on the context of Nordic and East European art allow us to assert that both Čiurlionis’ and his contemporaries’ creative work belongs to the tradition of Romanticism, or irrealistic tradition, which still existed in these countries at the beginning of the 20th century.
