Summary/Abstract: The article inquires into the Polish canon of values in th context of the planned (and partially realized) Polish axiological dictionary and a dictionary of European values. The canon is difficult to establish because apart from a descriptive it has a normative dimension (it is a set of features but also postulates) and is therefore questioned continually. The authors claim that the axiological canon, i.e. a set of generally accepted ethical norms, can be reconstructed in a way that is different from previous practice, namely by in-depth semantic analysis of selected entries.Axiological concepts such as freedom, equality, democracy, are heavily networked. As a consequence, while searching for the defining words relevant in the semantics of a given language, one arrives as a certain set of values that fulfil this function and that help the analyst approach the core (the axiological canon) of the culture. This is illustrated with analyses of equality, democracy, house/home, homeland, solidarity.
