Summary/Abstract: In his unfinished Dialogue between Philosopher, Jew and Christian, Abélard describes a peaceful conversation between intellectuals who belong to different confessions. The conversation is full of tolerance and wisdom. It concentrates on the relation between religion and morality. By means of a dream allegory, Abélard asks the question: is there some universal truth in religion, or is religion nothing more than mere social conformism necessary for keeping together the members of a community? This Dialogue exhibits some important problems of the epoch and shows Abélard’s approach to them, which gives the impression that intellectually he surpassed his own times.
