Summary/Abstract: In this polemic with Barbara Engelking’s “Powiat bielski” [Bielsko County] from the edited volume Dalej jest noc [Beyond is the Night, 2018], Joanna Tokarska Bakir draws on her own fieldwork in Podlachia as well as archival sources. She questions Engelking’s main thesis, according to which the only people who rescued Jews during the third phase of the Holocaust in Bielsko County where peasants from villages surrounding a manor house.
