Hypercorrections – When the Source Fools Us

Summary/Abstract: The article consists of two parts. In the first, theoretical, various approaches to hypercorrections are presented: 1) in the perspective of prescriptive linguistics and dialectology (problems of linguistic norms, language errors and their causes), 2) in the sociological and psychological context. The second part shows the problem of hypercorrections in historical sources, on the example of empirical data from Wielkopolska stock lists of the nobility from the second half of the 18th century. While analyzing hypercorrections, it is essential to determine their status, type, dependence on the speaker–hearer system, the level of text viewing.
