Summary/Abstract: The paper presents semantic and syntactic description of the verb życzyć (‘to wish’) and the speech act denoted by this verb. The study also focuses on the context of utterances and the intentionality of expressing one’s wishes. By analyzing the syntactic positions of the verb and the aims of the speaker, the author attempts at characteristizing wishes as linguistic politeness behaviour.
