Segmental and Suprasegmental Characteristic of Acoustic-Auditory Communication Units (On the Background of Binary Oppositions)

Summary/Abstract: The paper introduces a systematic way of segmental and suprasegmental characteristic of acoustic-auditory communication units on the background of seven binary oppositions. The basic, neutral element of observed acoustic characteristic and its marked opposite are defined within each opposition. The described system of the acoustic characteristics of phonemes and intonemes is based on the acoustic parameters of the Slovak language, however, it can also be applied as a model starting point in describing acoustic-auditory communication units in other languages.
