Summary/Abstract: The ongoing revision of the Convention on the Danube Navigation Regime has acquired particular significance since the adoption of the convention in 1948 in Belgrade. The leading role of the European Union in the negotiations has given new dimensions to European integrated inner-waters navigation. The Consolidated Text of the Draft of the Revised Convention of January 2007 relating to the Danube Navigation Regime, has brought about novel concepts to major provisions of legal, institutional and technical character, such as the territorial scope of the Convention (Art. 1), Council (Art. 5 -7), Secretariat {Art. 8), Decisions and Recommendations (Art. 10), Navigational Telecommunication (Art. 16) and Boatmaster and Vessel Certificates (Art. 20). Another novel component of the regime has been the designation of the Danube as Corridor VII of the Pan-European Transport Corridors, and consequently, as an efficient and competitive waterway. EU participation in the development of regional cooperation in all its aspects and in the integration of inland navigation, will greatly contribute to the promotion of economic, political and cultural cooperation between Bulgaria and other European countries.
