Summary/Abstract: An important aspect of every public speech is modality, since it expresses the attitude of the speaker and their evaluation of the subject of the speech and the whole situation. Traditionally epistemic modality is concerned with expressing possibility, probability and necessity. Means of expressing modality can be very various – they can be phonological, grammatical and lexical. The purpose of this article is to analyze the means of expressing epistemic modality and modal meanings in the presidents’ speeches from 1999 till 2014. Epistemic modal meanings that are registered in analyzed speeches are possibility, ability, ability/possibility, possibility/proposal, possibility/probability, necessity, assumption/ probability, certainty which are expressed by modal verbs, verbs, mood, predicate nouns, predicate adjectives, predicate adverbs, adverbs, participles and particles.
