Summary/Abstract: Frederic Rzewski is regarded as one of the pioneers within the speaking pianist compositional technique, which he has been extensively using and remodelling since the early 1970s. His composition Marriage (The Road, Mile 58) is a compelling example of the spoken / written language forming an inseparable part of musical material, though through different types of relations. The paper primarily considers links between two distinct, intertwined layers – the written text and the notated, purely musical text. We look at the use of language from a perspective of how music re-acts to words and their semi-natural / semi-imposed rhythm, how it introduces, commentates or re-enacts it, as well as looking at how the piano writing works without it.
