Summary/Abstract: The article discusses the historical evolution of the term pecunia, and its relation with the main livelihood in the archaic age of the Ancient Rome. Ownership of livestock has been a sign of well-being, and gradually the term develops to denote all items included in the patrimony of the private persons as well as their value equivalent in money. The author follows the different views on the etymology of this lexem and presents his understanding that at the time of the Lex Duodecim tabularum there was already a primitive monetary system, which is essential for the development of the term. The practice of natural exchange and the fixing of the selling price or the payment of fines to the state treasury of livestock is gradually overcome, but Roman tradition and conservatism retain its repercussions on the notion of money in the sense of money and wealth.
