Summary/Abstract: This paper demonstrates both the importance and the meaning of Rev 1:7–8 within the context of the entire Apocalypse. The prophetic statement in Rev 1:7, the fi rst of the Johannine prophecies (cf. in Rev 1:3), declares that the coming of Christ is absolutely certain. Following on immediately in Rev 1:8 is the first of only two instances (along with Rev 21:5–8) in which God speaks in the Apocalypse. God speaks through the prophet, yet in the first person, to assure Christians that the rule of the world is in his hands.
