Summary/Abstract: Texts, language, communication should always be considered in their social context. Texts do not merelyThe article starts from the premise that the human body is the most complex synthesis of our artisticculture. The iconography of the body reflects the philosophical and ideological development of cultures, whereas its history shows the extent to which aesthetic and legal motivations, emotions and institutionsare connected. In order to prove this point I considered mandatory revisiting the main epochs in whichsignificant changes were produced in the visual representation of the human body. The different mannerof rendering the body in art depends on social, political and religious contributions which underpin notonly a peculiar style in depicting the human body but also the production of a specific way of seeing, asart organizes and describes our perception field. This allows one to trace the shifts in representing thehuman body and to grasp the meaning behind them, in order to get a glimpse of the main historicalperiods. The research focuses on several epochs: Antiquity, Middle Ages, Renaissance, neo-classicalperiod, nineteenth and twentieth centuries and the changes the human body suffer in the manner it isdepicted but also in the way it is perceived. The exhaustive attempt in addressing the representation of thehuman body throughout centuries is also motivated by the fragmentary relationship the contemporaryindividual has with the past, sustained by a here and now attitude, having its roots in the avant-gardemovements of the twentieth century.
