Summary/Abstract: Using empirical findings, the author tests some propositions of the new working class theory and credentialist theory and clarifies these theoretical approaches concerning the implications of higher education for workplace democracy. The elitist utilization of cultural capital among the higher educated implies that those new working class theorists who expect that higher education in a context of underemployment wilI yield poütical leftism or activism may be disappointed.
