Summary/Abstract: The essay traces out some ethical, political, legal, and social implications of judicial repression of the freedom of thought, deploring the existance of verbal political crimes (delit d’opinion) in modern legislations. The author demonstrates that intolerant societies tend to repress not only individual opinions on certain issues, but rather a mode of thought which is at odds with the official ideology.
