Summary/Abstract: The article examine the first Norman invasion of the Balkans (1081 – 1085). The focus is on the diplomatic reaction of the Byzantine Empire to the Norman danger. The unsuccessful attempts to negotiate a Norman-Byzantine alliance are analyzed. The key moments of the military campaign of Robert Guiscard in the Balkans are highlighted.
