Summary/Abstract: This paper is devoted to the greatest name of Serbian agricultural cooperative movement, Mihailo Avramović, and his sociology of cooperative movement, so in its theoretical as well as in practical form. The first part deals with significant events in our cooperative movement towards the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century, starting from the foundation of first agricultural cooperatives, the initiation of the Central Union and its associating with the International Cooperative Union, till the passing of the Agricultural Cooperative Law. The second part focuses on theoretical and methodological aspects of Avramović's sociology of cooperative movement, and the third treats the tension between economic and social functions of cooperatives, as well as the splitting in national cooperative movement on the Jagodina congress.
