Bilateral Relations between Poland and Austria in the Interwar Period

Summary/Abstract: In the interwar period, Austria was not included among the main directions of Polish foreign policy. Poland was similarly located among the Austrian political priorities. Bilateral issues have been significantly affected by economic issues, largely connected with the complementarity of both economies, especially in the initial period of functioning of the both successive states. This meant that after initial disturbances in mutual relations, there were no significant political problems. However, for the Polish diplomacy, the Vienna outpost has become an important place for monitoring the European political scene and for maintaining international contacts. Before the expected merger with Germany, Poland sought to secure its economic interests in Austria and its position regarding the issue of Anschluss did not diverge from that of the European powers.
