Summary/Abstract: The paper analyzes class determinants of sport practices of families (parents and children) within the theoretical framework of Pierre Bourdieu’s class theory. The aim of the research was to characterize sport and physical recreation participation of respondents from upper and middle class (n=64) and their children, and to check whether sport participation is class-determined and whether this happens in accordance with correlation patterns indicated by Bourdieu with regard to the field of sport. Individual semi-structured in-depth interviews were applied. The research was carried out between December 2016 and March 2017 in Warsaw and Warsaw agglomeration. The results have revealed that the sport and physical recreation participation of both adults and children was congruent with the class patterns presented by Bourdieu in reference to sport practices. Family tradition and habits played a key role in taking a decision about selecting a physical activity for upper-class children. These children were involved in more types of sport practices than middle-class children, and even if both of these groups practiced the same sport, it was carried out in a different manner (e.g., less or more individualized, more costly, more closely supervised by the parents). The paper is concluded with the indication of the implications of the class-determined sports and recreational activities of the researched subjects.
