Summary/Abstract: The answer to the question is provided in two steps. First, the author discusses whether the Serbian side could have endorsed such an option and it turned out that prior to outbreak of the war in 1991 all main political forces and most of the public in Serbia have been opposed to the confederate option. The second issue discussed is: even in the Serbian side had agreed to the confederate solution, could that have been a sufficient condition to save Yugoslavia from disintegrating.
