Summary/Abstract: The role of education as a catalyst of sustainable development was highlighted in Agenda 21, a nonbinding action plan adopted by the United Nations during the Earth Summit. The General Assembly of the United Nations established the Decade of Education for Sustainable Development2005–2014 in an effort to initiate an important transition in the education system. Signatories tothe Strategy of Education for Sustainable Development, which was adopted in 2005 by the UnitedNations Economic Commission for Europe, are obliged to incorporate education for sustainabledevelopment into their domestic formal education systems at all levels and fields of study. Education for sustainable development is one of the protective factors for the environment. Its main taskis to develop natural and social environments that foster the ecological sustainability of the world’spopulation while raising eco-friendly awareness and eco-friendly attitudes. Early years education isan ideal moment to drive the education-for-sustainable-development agenda. Research suggeststhat early years education is a suitable moment to initiate the process in which eco-friendly awareness and attitudes are shaped. However, to instil the idea of sustainable development in children,it is necessary that one abandons traditional models and patterns of life. Thus, the focus of education must be on shaping open, creative and innovative attitudes. The process of children educationshould promote values that are fundamental to the holistic view of life.
