Summary/Abstract: This paper is intended to support the externalist thesis that social factors have an important influence on sicentific change and content of scientific theories itself. The first section outlines the main points of the rationalist philosophy of sicence which is essentially internalist; the special consideration is given to the sources of this internalism. The second secton resonstructs the main tenets of the relativist criticism of rationalism (together with internalism as its integral part); it also presents a new externalist position based on the concept of the referential framework (or paradigm). Special attention is given to the question how and where social and other external factors enter the scene. The final part is devoted to the elaboration of some important consequences of the externalist approach.
