Summary/Abstract: The Council of Europe plays a fundamental role in defending the principles of democracy and the rule of law. Those principles are promoted at the level of the union of states that it represents, as well as in the relation with the national governements. Moreover, the Council of Europe is a defender of the fundamental rights guaranteed by the European Court of Human Rights and, implicitly, the right to a fair trial.
