Summary/Abstract: The concord between the Kingdom of Serbia and the Vatican was preceded by a period (1912 - 1914) of confrontation between Serbia and Austria-Hungary regarding the Austrian religious protectorate over Roman Catholics in the »newly liberated regions« (Kosovo, Metohija, Sandzak and Macedonia). The Vatican defended Austrian protectoral rights in Albania but allowed France the same rights in the Turkish Empire. Italy claimed similar rights over Roman Catholic Albanians, hoping in this way to strengthen its political influence on Albanians in and out of Albania. Italy’s support of the concord signed by Serbia was prompted by the desire to diminish the Austrian religious protectorate in Albania. Serbia signed the concord in order to free itself of the Austrian protectorate over Roman Catholics in regions which had recently come under its own dominion. The concord was also meant to show Europe and »unliberated brothers« of the Roman Catholic faith the extent of religious tolerance and democracy Serbia offered. Austria-Hungary’s alleged protection of the rights of Roman Catholics disguised its actual intention of expanding and spreading its influence in the east.
