Summary/Abstract: Assistance means given aid to ships in distress at sea which are not under command and cannot operate on their own. Assistance is timely help given to avoid the risk of sinking the ship and of an imminent shipwreck. At the same time, search and rescue means helping all ships in distress to avoid a more serious accident and help after the maritime disaster. Assistance always involves the existence of a real danger. The search and rescue operations of ships, goods and persons at sea or in territorial waters are governed by the provisions of national laws and international agreements to which Romania is a party.
