Summary/Abstract: This essay is the author's integral version of the lecture given at the Institute of Contemporary History, and represents an attempt at clarifying the NATO-Serbian war of 1999 by pointing to some of its characteristic points. Several key events are highlighted, which took place before the outbreak of war in March 1999 but throw light on the events occurring during the war. The combat operations of NATO and the Serbian military and police forces are described, and are illustrated by the most important characteristics of each side's operations. The author mentions the novelties in using military technology seen in this war, and their effect. The losses of the warring sides are compared. In the concluding part of the text the author reviews the problems faced by the military defense of FR Yugoslavia following the end of the war, the effect of the losses sustained on the possibility and speed of repairs and production, and the political aspects of Serbia's relations with Montenegro. Finally, the author attempts to establish a theory different from that generally presented to the Yugoslav public regarding the outcome of the war of 1999, the winning side, and expected future events.
