Summary/Abstract: This paper presents the water quality and ecological status assessment for the Rama River and its tributary Volujak using diatom communities and physical and chemical water parameters. The research included five sites: three on the Rama River and two on the Volujak River. The sampling of diatom communities was done together with the field measurements of physical and chemical parameters of the water. Saprobity index (Pantle & Buck, 1995) was used for the water quality assessment. A total of 69 diatom taxa were found. Applied biological indices and measured physical and chemical parameters ranged from the oligosaprobic level (category I) of water quality for the sites: Rama (Lug, below the fish-pond), Volujak (Banjalučica), Volujak (Kuti), to the oligo-betamesosaprobic level (category I-II) of water quality at the sites: Rama (Mara’s Cave) and Rama (above Mara’s Cave). According to the legal regulation in the area of Bosnia and Herzegovina, according to the Decision on the characterization of surface and groundwater, the reference conditions and parameters for the assessment of water status and water monitoring, established a high ecological status for all investigated sites.
