Summary/Abstract: Adjectives of Albanian looked at from the derivation perspective have been studied since Hahn (1854) and Dozon (1878) to date, but the achievements of traditional grammar in the field of word formation (and semantics) have to be seen as a matter that requires a more profound scientific analysis. The derivation of adjectives in Albanian grammar is dealt within morphology, while semantic principles are little applied, and syntactic principles are not considered necessary at all. As a result, in recent studies devoted to the word formation of adjectives there are uncertainties and occasionally inaccuracies. Hence, in the typology of adjectival derivation we have noticed inaccuracies in our grammars. This has precisely been the focus of this study. As a solution to the problem, we see that the word formation of adjectives must be based on the X-bar theory of generative linguistics. Therefore, according to us, the derivative head in word formation is not only the word formation stem, but also the affixes, provided that the latter (the affixes) are able to change the lexical-grammatical category of the derived word. Based on the principle of the lexical head, we distinguish these types of derived adjectives: 1) adjectives with preposed articles (which we have divided into: a) participle adjectives with preposed articles; b) adjectives with preposed articles and with a prepositional phrase; c) adjectives with preposed articles formed with suffixes and d) adjectives with preposed articles formed with prefixes and suffixes; and e) adjectives that are formed with affixes); 2) adjectives without articles (a) adjectives with suffixes and (b) with suffixes and prefixes); 3) compound adjectives.
