Summary/Abstract: The study focuses on the phonetic level of Shakespeare’s language, particularly on spelling, and it represents an overview of the main translation difficulties encountered by the Romanian translators of several Shakespearean plays. Given the fact that Elizabethan pronunciation and spelling were considerably different from what subsequent readers and translators came to be accustomed to, the editorial intervention in the text has always been a controversial issue. The editors’ and the translators’ choices have left an indelible mark on our understanding of the Shakespearean text today.
