Summary/Abstract: The author of this article explores the parallels and the differences between Lukács’s History and Class Consciousness and Merleau-Ponty’s writing about the Marxism. The emphasis is put on the philosophical articulation of the relationship between the totality and totalitarism concerning the philosophy of history. In fact, both philosophers were confronted with the meanings of interconnection between the dynamics of history and the dialectical reason. Thus, the common aspect between these philosophers refers to the analysis of the opportunity of the „free necessity” on the basis of historical act. At the same time, there is strong divergence between them in relation to the logic and contingency of history. This disagreement leads them to diverse philosophical paths and confirms Merleau-Ponty as a post-phenomenological thinker and Lukács as a resignated Marxist at the end of his life.
