Summary/Abstract: The economic world is currently under the sign of profound changes, determined, in a significant extent, by the mutations in financial markets, the regulatory and institutional changes, illustrating its powerful impact on the financial system actors. The paper’s main purpose is to provide a comparative analysis of the performance and efficiency of commercial banks in seven European Union countries and an empirical analysis regarding the soundness of the Romanian banking system. The analysis undertaken in the paper highlights the need for banks to apply essential adjustments in their activity, such as the orientation to a new banking model, or the gearing to the latest regulations and tighter conditions of supervision on the financial sector. There were pointed out a series of issues which captured the overwhelming implications of the global financial crisis on the “health” of the financial system in EU, noticing the need for further measures that have as a main goal the avoidance of a financial system collapse.
