Summary/Abstract: St. Cyril of Alexandria is the founder of the Christological formula that defines the union between the divine nature and the human nature into the unique divine Hypostasis of the Son of God. This synthetic Christological formula was given the name of hypostatic union. With the help of this theological expression, St. Cyril of Alexandria successfully solved the Christological problem referring to the way in which the two natures could unite themselves and could coexist into the single hypostatic unity of the Word of God, without losing their integrity and specificity. Thus, St. Cyril of Alexandria protected the Church from heresy, which threatened to jeopardize the very foundation of the divine work of the salvation of mankind. Moreover, St. Cyril of Alexandria was the greatest defender of the title of “Theotokos”, given by the Church to the Virgin Mary, showing that if the Person who was born from the Virgin’s womb was the Son of God, then that one who gave birth to Him can only be the Mother of God, in its own and real sense. The Christology of St. Cyril of Alexandria combines with the teachings related to salvation, according to the patristic principle that says: “What was not assumed was not redeemed”. St. Cyril of Alexandria is considered in a way the president of all the seven Ecumenical Councils of the Church, because the dogmatic definitions established during those ecclesiastical meetings are all based on St. Cyril’s theological work, which is totally in agreement with the entire doctrine of the Church.
