Summary/Abstract: Italy had really showed a great interest in the development of Yugoslav-Hungarian relationships. At the beginning, all of this was due to the fact that the improvement of these relationships could also serve the achievements of Italia’s aims (organizing Middle Europe under the guidance of Italy). Later, however, Italy did not want at all to allow Yugoslavia to be given an opportunity to pull out of hostile surrounding. Italy was very clear about this as far as the Hungarian state officials are concerned. In October of 1926, Mussolini offered Hungary a sweeping political contract that was more favorable than the planned contract with Yugoslavia. By this offer, for the first time after the War, Hungary was offered a possibility to choose between two alternatives. The contract with Yugoslavia would mean that the ring around Hungary in the form of Small Entente would be weaken to a certain degree due to which Budapest would come out of political isolation in which it had lived. The second alternative, the rejection of concluding a contract with Yugoslavia and acceptance of Mussolini’s offer, would mean that Hungary would be in favor of a great power that had been also dissatisfied with the existing international order. By accepting the Italian suggestion, Hungary would reject the gradual destruction of Small Entente and instead create the foundation for revision.
