Economic Sectors in the Research of Economic Resilience of Regions

Summary/Abstract: As a result of the financial crisis and subsequently the economic crisis, the concept of economic resilience of the regions has become the interest of many researchers in the world. Although many years have passed since the crisis, its impact on the production and services sector of regions is still being analysed. The aim of the article is to review the concept of regional resilience and indication of regularities concerning resilience of economic sectors to crises. A review of international literature has been made, taking into account the different categories of regions and the importance of economic sectors for resilience of regions. Based on the literature review, it can be pointed out that three interpretations of regional resilience are taken into account: engineering, ecological and evolutionary. The key to economic resilience are macroeconomic policy, the degree of production specialisation, strong interconnections within industrial sectors and the diversification of regional economies. Research also indicates that metropolitan regions, despite the significant development of the financial sector and regions open to export, are vulnerable to economic shocks in the short term, but are resilient in the long-run. Peripheral agricultural regions poorly linked to the global economy and regions with above-average employment in the public sector are resilient in the short term and depend on central policies.
