Military Graves from Chatyr-Dag Cemetery in Eastern Crimea

Summary/Abstract: The article analyzes the military burials of the late Roman cemetery at Chatyr-Dag in the Crimea. A total of 13 items of weapons were examined, 11 of them originated from complexes and 2 from the cultural layer of the burial ground. The number of military graves in this cemetery is small — only5 out of 55 graves known in 2006. The author reviewed different points of view on the chronology of various types of weapons and came to somewhat different conclusions than the ones suggested in the monograph on the Chatyr-Dag cemetery. Based on the new analysis of the grave goods: burial 2 can be dated to phase C3/D1, burial3 to phase C3, burial 12 to phase D1/D2, burial55 to phase C3. Thus, the situation turned out to be somewhat different: the peak functioning of this cemetery shifted from the Tetrarchy, as noted earlier, to the later period of Constantine the Great –Constantius II (c. 320/330—360 AD), that is, from phase C2 to phase C3 of the European chronological scale.
