Summary/Abstract: The Monroe doctrine has been an essential component of the United States of America’s foreign policy until the recent past. Although US politicians have rarely mentioned it from the second half of the 20th century, it has been present in the background of inter-American relations since 1823. Everyone has been aware of its existense as a guiding rule in both the United States and Latin America for the past two centuries. In the 21st century its validity began to lapse, but it was repealed only recently. The aim of my paper is to outline the theoretical and practical content of this doctrine from its birth until its annulment, as well as its most important modifications that were adjusted to the transformations of US domestic and foreign policy, with special attention to its implications for the societies of Latin America.
