Summary/Abstract: The social policy in Greece is based on the state compulsory social security system and on the state health service. Family benefits, senior citizens’ benefits, disability benefits, maternity allowances and unemployment benefits are also the responsibility of the state. Educational policy is based on the functioning of a centralized state education system. Social policy has underestimated the role of human capital. The article puts forward a thesis that, among other things, these determinants have conditioned the problems of the state’s economic development. Thus, this paper raises the issue of Greek social policy in the context of the state’s economic crisis.
