A CONTRIBUTION TO THE UNDERSTANDING OF THE CONCEPTS OF NATIONALITY AND CITIZENSHIP IN TODAY’S EUROPE

Summary/Abstract: The concepts of nationality and citizenship today seem to be taken for granted as much as religion was hundreds of years ago. We do not think about those ideas and accept them at face value. In many cases, nationality is even mistaken with citizenship, which is an instance that generates its own further issues. Numerous have the attempts to define nation and its paradigms (nationality, nationalism), yet almost none had succeeded, first and foremost because the concepts were taken for granted. However, some authors such as Gellner and Geary do have a more successful approach. This paper concentrates on giving a summary of the most popular attempts of defining a nation, contrasting it with the concept of citizenship, in the end giving a summary of the results of taking such concepts for granted. The paper concentrates only on the broadest of issues, realizing that even the basics in understanding the concepts at hand are murky and undefined.
