Summary/Abstract: The aim of this paper is to present Ken Wilber’s meta-theory of development of personality, together with the two main notions of this theory: synthesis and the border. According to Wilber, there are five levels of theories of development of the ego. Each level relates to one corresponding level of consciousness. Wilber claims that the presentation of these theories in the correct order – from theories ascribed to the narrowest level of consciousness to theories ascribed to the widest – leads to one, coherent and synthetic (meta)theory of consciousness. The notion of synthesis also pertains to the unification of detached elements of consciousness in the given consciousness level. On the other hand, the notion of the border pertains to the phenomenon which causes deconstruction and reduction of consciousness. These notions in Wilber's theory are ontologically important, as they correspond to the opposing dualisms: complementary (synthesis) and adversarial (the border).
