Summary/Abstract: Entire 20th century passed in the conditions of whether apparent or covered but always dramatic contradiction of two schools of Rustaveli studies: N. Marr radically confronted Vakhtang’s traditional national concept and called it “national-critical school”, while he called “scientific-critical school” the St. Petersburg’s school of Rustaveli studies founded by him. The central problem of this controversy was such issue of academic nature as the genesis of the plot of The Knight in the Panther’s Skin – therefore, at one glance, this confrontation was based on purely scientific interests. But the controversion related to clarification of the substance of the plot of Rustaveli’s poem – whether it is of original nature (Vakhtang) or “borrowed” from Persian literature (N. Marr) – implies much wider context than it seems; this is not only academic problem of the literary criticism, as genesis of the plot of Rustaveli’s “The Knight in the Panther’s Skin” is directly related to the orientation of Georgian mental culture – whether it belongs to Europe or to Asia and in the wider context it transforms into more significant geopolitical problem – is Georgia Europe or Asia with its historical development, with all relevant outcomes.
