Summary/Abstract: The Union of Transylvania with Romania on December 1st, 1918 was also approved by the Germans in this province, who were known as Transylvanian Saxons. On January 8th, 1919 an assembly of the Central Saxon Committee and of the National German-Saxon Council was held in Mediaș in order to discuss the Saxons’ attitude towards the Union. The 138 representatives passed a declaration in which they acknowledged the right to self-determination of Romanians, the most numerous ethnicity in Transylvania, and adhered to their resolution of uniting this province with Romania. The declaration explains the reasons of their attitude. Moreover, the assembly urged the other German citizens of Romania to follow the Saxons’ example and to accede to the union of the provinces they were living in with Romania. The Mediaș declaration marked the beginning of a new era. The resolution had an ample echo in the Saxon and Romanian public opinion. The historian Nicoale Iorga wrote on January 16th, 1919 that the proclamation adopted in Mediaș was a document written with great wisdom, at the right moment for Saxons, as well as for Romanians. At the end are some methodical recommendations for using the Mediaș declaration in class.
