Summary/Abstract: Linguistics analyses play an increasingly important role in the judicial practise. This is mainly due to the both progressive decline of handwritnig in society and transferring the majority of interhuman communication to electronic means of communication and Internet. During study of printed and on-screen text, the only layer of language trail which an expert can analyse – is the linguistic layer of the text. Basing such analysis on achievements of field called forensic linguistics can considerably simplify indicating an author of the questioned statement, especially through determining his or her age, gender, education level and profession only in accordance with analysis of the text. Achievements of linguistics can be as well useful for cases in which an essential part is determining the meaning of words used in the message or author’s intention. It should be noted however, that research based on forensic linguistics – very helpful though – meets numerous limitations and some linguistic theories (e.g. linguistic fingerprint theory) might turn out to be wrong.
