Summary/Abstract: Classical Islamic history books and biographical literature – tabaqât – are not just a royal chronology or war history, they also contain a great deal of socio-historical information. In this study, we covered a social movement that emerged in 201/816 at the time of Abbasid Chalif Ma’mûn in the midst of the civil war in Baghdad to overcome anarchy. This movement, which we called "Emir bi’l-maꜥrûf" according to its motto, gives us interesting clues about the behavioral reflexes of an Islamic society that has fallen into crisis and chaos.
